Continual Education
Adapting a stance of cultural humility is the equivalent of a meditator keeping a beginner’s mind, no matter how long they have been meditating. I keep abreast of current ideas, as well as timeless works of generations past, through formal continuing education courses and workshops, books and articles, podcasts, documentaries and other films and more. The idea is we don’t know what we don’t know, and the more we learn the more obvious this becomes. I will be updating this site with recommended resources.
Accountability
What Does Accountability Look Like For Me and White People in General?
(headings derived from Robin DiAngelo)
Building Authentic
Relationships
I’m grateful to have cultivated loving, supportive, relationships with BIPOC that keep me accountable. In these relationships I am in the role of mentee, friend, husband, family member, colleague, advisee and/or ally. These are the folks that tell me “keep going” when they appreciate what they see, or “slow down” when I’m out of integrity.
Circles of Support
I currently sit in several formal and informal circles of support. My partners in White People Confronting Racism (WPCR), CEMPSYCH LLC, and Eclipse Consulting, as well as the advisory board of WPCR comprise these formal circles. Informally, I rely on the multiracial network of personal and professional relationships I have developed over the years on my racial justice journey.
Affinity Groups
Affinity groups are comprised of people of similar backgrounds. It is crucial for White people to get together and support each other in recognizing and unlearning their learned habits of White supremacy. Doing this work in this way helps us reduce the harm of unconscious microaggressions that we inevitably dole out in mixed race groups. It also increases the likelihood that when we show up with the intention of being allies, we are able to contribute in ways that are needed of us.
I am grateful for my partners in White People Confronting Racism, and the men I sit in circle with as part of White Men Unraveling Racism through the Mankind Project, as well as a select group of White friends who travel with me on the journey to justice.
Financial Accountability
I donate 15% of proceeds generated through this work to BIPOC led justice organizations. Some regular recipients include: The Philadelphia Community Bail Fund, The Movement For Black Lives and Training For Change. I work on a sliding scale, and a percentage of my work is done pro bono. I partner with BIPOC colleagues in delivery of consulting services, and I prioritize BIPOC owned facilities/catering services wherever possible. This website was designed by Wolferman Consulting.
